A nucleus colony (or a nuc) is a small Honey bee colony that is created from a larger colony. A nucleus hive has all the features of a standard hive, except it is smaller, and a smaller space makes it easier for the bees to control the temperature and humidity of the colony, which is vital for brood rearing. A nucleus colony can be used to stop overcrowding in a larger healthy colony by splitting some of the population, they can also be used to care for spare queens or to develop into strong colonies quickly.
